Adulteress in Theodor Fontane's "Effie Briest" and Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil's "Aşk-ı Memnu"
In this study, the works named “Effie Briest” and “Aşk-ı Memnu”, which are described as classic works for German and Turkish literature and written by important writers of the 19th century, were examined and compared with each other. The similarities and differences in the works were tried to be revealed by going over the adulteress, which is the common motif in both works. It is striking that there are different approaches to adulteress. The difference in these approaches can be seen not only in different cultures, but also in different socio-economic strata belonging to the same culture. The writers, who left their mark on the period in which they lived and the following years with their works, effectively reflected the period they were in to their works. A woman who betrays her husband and the consequences/results of the forbidden relationship form the basis of these novels. A deceiving woman who fits real life with all its aspects and is a cross-section of reality and her place in society and the distortions in the social structure are the most prominent points in both novels. From this point of view, the point of view of the society on the adulteress belonging to different cultures in the works has been tried to be revealed.
