Abstract
Narrative Memory: Remember in The Tanzimat Novels
Humans create by remembering themselves and others and thus creates a narrative identity for themselves. This narrative is very valuable in terms of showing how humans preserve their identity through their memory, how humans change in the process of existence, and how humans communicate with others as individuals. As a psychological being and a part of the social structure, humans can only build themselves with this "total" consciousness. There are social, psychological, and historical effects at every stage of this life process. Especially in the Tanzimat Period, when the traditional patterns of the empire were broken, this emphasis will be much more pronounced.
The Tanzimat period, which includes the birth process of the Turkish novel, is a period in which the Ottomans turned to the West, and changes in individual, social, economic, political, and cultural areas accelerated. Emphasis on "unity / memory" and "separation / forgetting" is frequently observed in the narratives in this period when the elements that constitute social and individual consciousness are sought.
In this study, the types of remembering in the novels of the Tanzimat period will be determined and their functions will be examined on a fictional level.
