Pierre L’ermite in The Historiography of The Crusades: An Ordinary Monk or Architect of The Crusade?
Pierre L’ermite, the most enthusiastic preacher of the First Crusade, was shown as the architect of the Crusade with interesting narrations by Albertus, one of the crusade chronist and Willermus, who took his work as reference, Pierre's pilgrimage to Jerusalem, that he returned receiving a letter asking for help from the Patriarch of Jerusalem by Jesus’ order, and that finally he encouraged the Pope for the Crusade by meeting with him in Rome were depicted vividly by the aforementioned authors. These records, enriched and adorned over time, corresponded exactly in the Works written through the 19th century, and Pierre L’Ermite has long been believed to have organized the Crusade despite some exceptions.Yet, it is not possible to understand that the Crusade which the Papacy prepared its intellectual infrastructure for a long time is attributed to an ordinary monk. Indeed, the studies have shown that Pierre, an influential preacher, was an unsuccessful leader in the Crusades, commanding only the pioneers of the Crusade armies. In this article, the records of Albertus and Willermus have been compared with the sources of the period and the role of Pierre L’Ermite in the Crusade has been attempted to be determined examining modern works as well.
