Abstract

Intervention of the Author or the Scribe: Differences Between the Copies of Mantık-i Esrâr
One of the versified translations of Mantiq al-Tayr in Turkish was done by Fedayî Mehmed Dede in the 17th century. Fedayî Mehmed Dede, who was originally from Antep, Turkey, was Mawlawi, and lived in Mawlawi Lodge of Tripoli for many years. Title of his translation is Mantık-ı Esrâr. Some researchers claim that this is a “full translation” of Mantiq al-Tayr. However Fedayî, the translator, excluded 30 sections from the translation. In addition to this, he added a new story to his translation. Eight manuscript copies of Mantık-ı Esrâr have been located so far. As it is understood in colophon, Leipzig copy is the autograph copy of the translation. There is also a litograph print of the translation which is made in 1857. Two of the manuscripts are quite different from the autograph copy. In this paper a comparative study of the Hüseyin Kocabaş copy and Leipzig copy will be asserted regarding the differences. The differences, couplet additions/subtractions, interventions made in lines as well as phrases and words between the Hüseyin Kocabaş manuscript and the autograph copy will be listed and exemplified. Because of the nature and complexity of these changes, it will be asked if the translation revised by the translator himself.
