An Evaluation on British Ambassador to Turkey Paul Laurence’s Tour of East of Turkey Between 15-21 June 1980
This study analyses British ambassador to Turkey Paul Laurence’s report submitted to Foreign Office after his tour of east of Turkey between 15-21 June 1980. The Ambassador recorded his impressions of the areas that he visited and sent a report to London about his analysis of the region. The reports of the British Embassy in Ankara continuously informed London. These reports generally aim to provide first-hand information to the British Foreign Ministry about the events in Turkey. In addition, the British Embassy diplomats made occasional tours in Turkey and they reported their observations to London. One of these trips was personally made by the British Ambassador to Turkey Paul Laurence. The date of the visit was 15-21 June 1980. The British Ambassador went to several provinces in the east part of Turkey and many districts were also visited by him. Apart from the comments made about the region, the Ambassador also gave information about the local official administrators that he had contacted during his visits. The Ambassador’s personal comments on these officials also took place in his report. This essay is a result of a rigorous study in the British archives and examines the British Ambassador’s visit during June 1980.
